The owl butterflies are in the genus Calligo, from the Amazon, Brazil and Peru. This is displayed front-side up, so we see the belly of the insect rather than its back. This allows us to see the ocelli (eye spots).. A flash of wings will make this tiny insect look much larger than life and much safer to leave it alone. Calligo, (and owls) fly in the evening, just before dark. This habit is called crepuscular.
